Cue the music (dun, dun, da, da, dun, dunā€¦), the long-awaited, injury-inducing Mission: Impossible ā€“ Fallout is upon us. Ethan Hunt and crew are back for their sixth impossible mission!Ā And once again, the IMF team is racing against time, as they frantically maneuver their way through a series of disasters of biblical proportions on ā€œa mission gone bad.ā€ In the midst of death-defying high altitude stunts and an edge-of-your-seat motorcycle chase through Paris, Ethan Hunt and his team are running for their lives, while simultaneously trying to save others.

As a Gospel Advancing Ministry youth leader, do you sometimes feel like thatā€™s your job description tooā€”running for your life, while simultaneously trying to save others? Not that you should try the jaw-dropping stunts that Hunt pulls off, but there are a few intriguing parallels between Mission: ImpossibleĀ 6 and the seemingly impossible mission of motivating and mobilizing your students to advance the gospel. So as you seek to get your Christian students amped up and excited about the mission God has called them to, here are three parallels to consider.

  1. A Seemingly Impossible Mission

In Fallout, Ethan Hunt is assigned another seemingly impossible mission. Itā€™s a mission he canā€™t possibly accomplish on his own. Ethan would certainly fail without the help of his support team: Alan, Luther, Benji and more.

As believers, weā€™ve also been given a seemingly impossible mission, which Jesus first described for us in Matthew 28:18-20:

ā€œI have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.Ā Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,Ā baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.Ā Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.ā€

Try This! āÆ

Ask your students this week if they sometimes feel like the prospect of sharing the gospel with their friend is an impossible mission.

How are we to ā€œmake disciplesā€ in a world that increasingly considers Christianity exclusivist, judgmental and hypocritical? On our own, there is no way. But, thanks be to God, we have a supernatural support team who goes with us on our mission! Jesus promised to be with us ā€œalways, even to the end of the world.ā€ And in Acts 1:8, He promised us the Holy Spirit power we need to be effective witnesses for Him: ā€œBut you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhereā€”in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.ā€

So when the going gets tough and we feel like giving up on our friends or family members who donā€™t seem the least bit interested in a relationship with Jesus, we mustnā€™t lose hope. Instead, we should double-down and lean in and let Godā€™s presence, power and never-ending love for the lost pour through us as we strive to accomplish our mission.

  1. Awesome Weapons

The Bible describes our arsenal of spiritual weapons like this:

We are human, but we donā€™t wage war as humans do.Ā We use Godā€™s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.Ā We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

Ethan Hunt and gang may have the latest and greatest techno-weapons that nobody sees coming, but as believers we have the very armor of God and the infinite power of prayer to Almighty God on our side!

How do we use these spiritual armaments? We wake up each morning asking the Holy Spirit to fill us and give us wisdom in our decisions. Then throughout the day, we keep our ā€œspiritual radarā€ turned on for God-given opportunities to reach out to those who donā€™t know Jesus personally, so we can share the love of God and the truth of the gospel. Weā€™re not out to argue or debate people into faith in Jesus. Weā€™re here to love people and shine a light on the truth of the gospel by explaining it to others in a clear and compelling way. At Dare 2 Share, we call this the Prayer, Care, Share approach to sharing our faith.

  1. A Race Against Time

In MI:6, the countdown clock is ticking for Hunt and his team. Theyā€™re in a race against time. And thereā€™s a very real sense in which we, too, are in a race against time.

No one knows what tomorrow holds, which is why we should bring a sense of urgency to our efforts to share the gospel with others. For example, perhaps a friend is struggling and depressed and possibly feeling suicidal, but we have no real clue how low they actually are. Reaching out with the hope of the gospel could make a critical difference in their life today. The cosmic countdown clock is ticking, as well. No one knows the day or the hour of Christā€™s return or when our own time on earth will be over and we will go to meet our Maker, so we must make the most of the time we have NOW.

We may not be Ethan Hunt, but we are something even more excitingā€”followers of Jesus Christ with the power of the Holy Spirit inside us on a Mission: Incredible! Help your students understand that they have a critical part to play in this impossible mission made possible by the power and presence of Jesus Christ.
